Friday, Arrival
At 6:45 a.m. MCBC Youth Mission Team left the church and embarked on a long road trip up the 5 Interstate Freeway for the final destination of Newark, CA just south of Oakland.
We pulled into FBF, Family Bible Fellowship, church at exactly 3:00 p.m. friday afternoon. The church is located in the middle of a business area, in a very nice office building. They have only been at this location since 2005, so everything is new or being built. We stayed in their youth/children's ministry room, a huge area separated by a partition. We had access to a kitchenette, bathrooms, and showers. Us girls took the youth side and the boys took the children's side for the week. The boys side had open floor-to-ceiling windows which they covered halfway with white butcher paper and our general meeting/breakfast area was on the girls side.
Tim came by once we set up our rooms. He is from South Carolina and is the church starting strategist for CSBC in the Fremont area. We helped him out all week with anything he needed done, from throwing a party to aiding the Afghan Coalition.
Anyway, he
took us to dinner at a restaurant of one of his friends. I believe it was Aziz's apartment we ate at because he did not have enough room in his restaurant to hold all ten of us. We had lamb, chicken and beef kabobs, naan, boulani, salad with no lettuce, rice, and a chickpea and potato side dish. This was a common dinner throughout the week. What was really cool about this experience was where we ate. No tables, no chairs, we sat in a square (it was closer to a square than a circle because that was how the pillows were arranged) on the floor with a tablecloth in the middle of us and the food in to-go containers brought up from Aziz's restaurant on
that tablecloth and we passed around the food and served ourselves. We were given forks and knives, but they proved difficult to use when you had to hold your plate in one hand and try to scoop rice onto your fork with the other, so most of us just used our fingers.
Aziz's apartment was decorated with all kinds of rugs, pictures, and things from Afghanistan. It was a lot of fun having dinner there. His hospitality was amazing! He welcomed 9 complete strangers into his home to eat dinner.
After dinner, we drove back to the church and hung out for a while, then we all walked to 7-Eleven in the very cold night air for some snacks. It was good to get out and walk after having been in a car for almost 9 hours that morning.
